Founded in 1947 by Fred Helker. After graduating from watchmakers college in Elgin,IL in 1945 he taught watchmaking briefly before going into business in his hometown of Platteville. The business has operated in 4 different locations. In 1979 his daughter, Kay Helker assumed operation of the business. Kay has served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Jewelers Association and is a Past President. She has taken GIA (Gemological Institute of America) classes in diamonds, colored gems, and pearls.

Building Historic Information
Built in 1874 in the center of Platteville's Historic District. This site has been a drug store, shoe store, and meat market. Helker's has occupied this site since the early 1960's. It has undergone exterior facade and interior renovation to reveal original historic features.
